Are you interested in the event industry? Then this Bachelor’s programme with its balanced combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience is just right for you! During your studies, you will immerse yourself in the art and science of event planning and gain knowledge in the organisation, design and implementation of events.

The course structure has been developed for today’s learners, incorporating flexibility to cater to individual learning rhythms and schedules. The curriculum is structured around 17 core modules, equivalent to 180 ECTS credits, ensuring a comprehensive educational experience.

Upon completion of the programme, you will have learned about various areas of event management, including marketing, budgeting, tourism and general management principles. You will have a deep understanding of event production and design as well as event concepts. Throughout your studies you will develop skills such as analysing cultural and historical influences on the events industry, applying modern concepts and presenting ideas effectively to different audiences. This multi-faceted approach ensures that you are not just an event planner, but an expert who is able to understand and influence the event industry ecosystem.

Additionally, the programme places a strong emphasis on teamwork and leadership skills and prepares you for working in event teams.

Admission

Entry Requirements for the Bachelor Event Management, B.A.

The examination board decides on admission.

Previous education requirement:

To be eligible for admission, you must be at least 18 years old by the time your studies begin. In terms of education, you should have completed A-levels, hold a Matriculation Certificate from Malta, a Pre-tertiary certificate from Malta, German Abitur, or a Foundation Certificate from a UK higher educational institution. You can also present any other international equivalent that corresponds to level 4 of the MQF, specifically with a focus on events management or a related subject. If you are interested and have experience in the event industry but do not have a certified qualification, you are still welcome to apply. In this case, you should submit a portfolio in which you document your experience.

Language requirements:

For the programme in German:

  • A certificate that proves your mastery of the German language at the level of B2 of CEFR OR
  • a secondary school certificate for a German medium of instruction school.

For the programme in English:

  • A certificate that proves your mastery of the English language at the level of B2 of CEFR OR
  • a secondary school certificate for an English medium of instruction school.

Further requirements:

You should be equipped for online learning. This means you need hardware suitable for online lectures and accessing the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). The necessary equipment includes a personal computer or a tablet with a keyboard. A mobile phone won’t suffice. You must have tools for coursework such as word processing software, table calculation software, presentation software, a PDF reader and printer, and a backup medium like a USB thumb drive with a minimum capacity of 32GB. If there are specialized software needs to accommodate specific disabilities like visual or hearing impairments, you are responsible for having these tools available for your use.

Furthermore, you must demonstrate digital competency. This includes basic computer skills, like installing software and backing up data, as well as internet skills like online searching and downloading files. Proficiency in word processing, especially with software like Microsoft Word or Open Office, and the ability to print to PDF are essential.

Application through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

In addition, admission is also possible via additional qualifications or extensive professional experience that comply with the guidelines and procedures for the recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Recognition

How could I apply for credits?

If you have already completed comparable coursework in a Bachelor’s programme or a comparable programme at another university or institution, recognition is possible in principle. For the credit check, please send us an overview of the grades of the achievements as well as a module handbook, if available, or other information about the scope and content of your prior learning by e-mail. Please note the guidelines and the procedure for the recognition of prior learning (RPL).

Content

What will be the content of your study?

Semester 1

Marketing

This module equips you with essential event marketing techniques and foundational marketing principles. It covers areas such as target group behavior, market segmentation, the 7 Ps of Service Marketing Mix, and the execution of integrated marketing campaigns. You will explore various marketing forms, learn budgeting, control marketing activities, and enhance both offline and online communication  strategies. The course also nurtures creative techniques for idea generation and strategy development, alongside refining professional communication skills like proposal writing and presentations.

Media Management

This module you will learn the technological and organizational facets of media planning at events, encompassing a spectrum of professional applications in both print and digital realms, on- and offline. It emphasizes a multifaceted exploration of media and technology utilization in event contexts, culminating in development of a  comprehensive media plan by you that entails the meticulous selection and evaluation of various media and technological modalities, such as platforms, apps, and social media. In alignment with contemporary industry trends, the course also includes a focus on innovative engagement tools like Voting Polls, Event Management Apps, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Artificial Intelligence, and Holograms to captivate audiences.

Project Management

This module equips you with foundational knowledge in project management, fostering versatility through exposure to various business fields such as event management, marketing, IT, software development, and construction. You will cultivate a robust understanding of both the distinct and shared attributes of projects across these diverse sectors. The course encourages the mastery of pivotal project management practices, encompassing realms like self-management, time-management, team collaboration, communication, and presentation. Moreover, it sheds light on essential internal marketing and communication concepts. Key areas of focus include successful project management techniques and methods, team-oriented creativity,  effective budget oversight, precise project documentation, and the basics of internal marketing and communication within project teams.

Semester 2

Marketing Strategies

This module teaches you diverse strategies in event marketing and experiential marketing campaigns. Focusing on various business event sectors like Trade Shows and Product Launches, you will learn sales-oriented thinking, market research, and target-group analysis to implement tailored advertising campaigns. The curriculum covers essential areas such as experiential marketing fundamentals, strategic planning, budget management, and the effective use of inbound and outbound marketing campaigns. It emphasizes practical skills, encouraging you to create and manage comprehensive, strategic, and integrated marketing campaigns for different business events.

Media Production

This module aims to empower you with the skills to develop professional media campaigns and proficiently utilize multimedia technology for events. Through a comprehensive exploration of various analogue and digital media prevalent in news, entertainment, and business communication, you will acquire technological proficiency and an understanding of budgeting aspects, such as costs, time, and competency. It encourages students to assess, select, and engage with suitable third-party media contractors, ensuring alignment with project requirements and budget constraints. Additionally, the module fosters hands-on experience, encouraging you to explore and apply creative media tools, editing, and broadcasting software such as screencast-o-matic, Vimeo, Biteable, iMovie, Adobe, Canva, among others, to enhance your practical knowledge and expertise.

Project Communication & Management

This module is designed to equip you with the competence and confidence to manage various departments involved in an event project effectively. It emphasizes identifying and understanding the roles and influences of different stakeholders and applying effective management and communication strategies. You will learn to gather information, evaluate the workload of each department, and comprehensively assess resource requirements. This will enable you to formulate a holistic management plan that encompasses the needs of all stakeholders and shareholders involved in the project. The curriculum covers essential areas such as complex project management techniques, team and stakeholder management, resource allocation, strategic budget setting, and proper documentation practices for projects.

Semester 3

Experience Design

This module immerses you in the principles, practices, theories, and processes intrinsic to contemporary event design, guiding you through every stage of event creation—from idea generation to evaluation. You will delve into experiential design elements like sensory and emotional experiences, staging, and audience flow. Through hands-on experience, you will collaborate in teams to plan and design an event in alignment with a contemporary brief, in consultation with event professionals. Emphasis will be placed on cultivating teamwork, time management, effective communication of creative ideas, and reflective practices on personal creativity and collaboration skills. Key areas explored include the role of events in the experience economy, teamworking, creative collaboration, and effective pitching to clients and stakeholders, mirroring real-world client tender processes with feedback from tutors and event professionals.

Event Management

This module equips you with essential knowledge and skills to proficiently manage various event types, ensuring meet stakeholder and shareholder expectations. You will learn to create, develop, and deliver events by employing specialized knowledge and skills, referencing authoritative industry and academic sources such as EMBOK (Event Management Body of Knowledge). The course emphasizes the strategic purposes behind event innovation and the articulation of objectives to fulfill those purposes. Key areas covered include budgeting, marketing, health and safety, HRM, sponsorship acquisition, and event evaluation, encompassing various aspects such as financial management, stakeholder management, professional planning, and logistics. Ultimately, you will be well-versed in the practicalities of organizing, evaluating, and safely implementing successful events.

Online Marketing Management

This module equips you with comprehensive knowledge and skills in online marketing management, focusing on current business needs. You will learn various aspects such as key performance indicators (KPIs), technological capabilities, and strategic applications of online marketing tools and strategies, including SEO, SEA, and CRM. The course emphasizes practical experience, encouraging you to develop and implement digital marketing plans, utilize online survey tools, and engage in hands-on projects such as collaborating with businesses to design, conduct, and analyze bespoke experience evaluation surveys, ultimately producing professional evaluation reports for clients.

Semester 4

Sustainable Event Design

This module nurtures your creativity in event design with a strong emphasis on sustainability and ethics. It delves deeply into the integration of sustainable principles and practices in various aspects of event planning, implementation, and evaluation. You will engage in critical analysis of various event components like staffing, suppliers, and technology, fostering an understanding of sustainability as a central aspect in the modern events industry. Practical engagement is encouraged, with you conducting sustainability audits, collaborating directly with industries to gather performance data, and acting as consultants to recommend sustainable improvements and innovations. Through case studies, interaction with industry professionals, and attendance at physical and hybrid events, you gain hands-on experience, enhancing your professional network and practical knowledge in sustainable event management. The curriculum covers essential areas like energy use, waste management, and sustainable leadership, preparing you to meet contemporary industry challenges with ethical and sustainable solutions.

Event Production

This module is dedicated to empowering you with the confidence and expertise necessary to manage various project and marketing objectives related to event production. The coursework deeply involves you in operational and logistical aspects, such as supply chain management, infrastructure, and support functions. A comprehensive exploration of best HRM practices is also integrated, recognizing the crucial role of event personnel. You will delve into legal considerations, technological advancements, and adaptive strategies to navigate unforeseen changes in production plans, budgets, and schedules. Emphasis is placed on practical experience, encouraging you to participate in roles ranging from box office and marketing to technical support within the event industry, fostering a well-rounded understanding and hands-on skills in event production.

Event Safety and Risk Management

This module equips you with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills essential for effective risk and safety management in event planning and execution. It delves into strategic theories of risk, illustrated with real-life case studies and incidents, helping you garner profound insights into event-related hazards and disasters. You gain robust legal acumen, exploring the realms of EU and international law, coupled with an analysis of various pertinent laws and their application in event management. The curriculum stresses the significance of mastering the execution of risk assessments – a universally applicable and crucial skill – enabling you to meticulously evaluate various risks such as alcohol, drugs, crowd and fire safety, terrorism, and emergency management within the event sector. A strong focus is placed on practical problem-solving abilities, encouraging you to scrutinize actual industry misfortunes, thereby cultivating your adeptness in devising strategic control measures to mitigate risks effectively. This approach not only enhances your legal and theoretical understanding but also empowers you with the confidence and competence to handle real-world risk scenarios in various event contexts.

Semester 5

Strategic Event Management

This module immerses you in the strategic management of events and event businesses, emphasizing the mastery of various strategic management tools and business models. You delve into analysis techniques like PESTEL, SWOT, and others, fostering a comprehensive understanding that enables the development of long-term business plans and strategies. A crucial component includes creating robust business plans, emphasizing financial strategies and risk management, incorporating elements like crowdfunding, sponsorships, and merchandise. You will be equipped with practical skills such as negotiation, contracting, and a nuanced understanding of different financial and legal standards in event management. In essence, the module crafts strategic thinkers adept at navigating the business landscapes of the event industry.

Digitisation of the Event Industry

This module dives deep into the evolving realm of digital and digitised events, exploring a spectrum from online meetings to hybrid events. It emphasizes current trends and innovations like cryptocurrencies and NFTs, investigating their roles in event experiences. The coursework focuses on comprehending and evaluating emerging technological solutions such as AI, AR, VR, and holograms, analyzing their application and impact across various event genres through case studies. You will not only build a foundation on prevailing technologies but will also envision and model futuristic event concepts, integrating innovative ideas with practical project management approaches to assess their feasibility and potential to revolutionize the event industry.

Destination Event Tourism

This module delves into the strategic role of entertainment and event portfolios in marketing, branding, and promoting various destinations. It emphasizes the management of the industry as a strategic marketing tool to enhance the experience economy. You will apply their marketing and business knowledge specifically to tourism and international event management, developing intercultural competence. You will analyze target groups of mega-events and tourism, evaluating various event portfolios, destination marketing strategies, and their outcomes. The course covers diverse destinations and event types, from arts and cultural festivals to dark tourism and over-tourism. The module, rooted in experiential theory and destination marketing theory, focuses on delivering unique and exceptional experiences to gain competitive advantage, attracting and retaining visitors. Guidance on conducting secondary research for literature reviews will also be provided, ensuring academic rigor aligned with real world industry contexts.

Semester 6

Professional Practice

This module is designed to nurture your professional development in event management. Through reflections on work placements, educational contexts, and other practical experiences, you will critically assess your competencies, knowledge, and skills against the industry’s best practices, focusing on key aspects like risk management and sustainability. You will evaluate contemporary employment conditions in the events industry, considering leadership, skills development, and wellbeing. The course encourages you to strategize your career paths, identifying job opportunities and additional training needs, and enhances your reflective practices and application of experiential learning cycles. Ultimately, you will compile an online portfolio showcasing your proficiency and understanding of comprehensive industry practices to outline realistic future career opportunities and continuous professional development (CPD) needs.

Event Staging and Production (Major Project)

In this module, you will synthesize all acquired competences, skills, and knowledge, applying them to a live event project. Working in teams, you will undertake a project, possibly for a client or as an entrepreneurial activity. You will manage all aspects of the event, from initial concept to completion, incorporating creative design, problem-solving, and optimal decision-making techniques. Key responsibilities include documentation, defining purpose and goals, managing budgets, team coordination, risk assessment, marketing, and evaluating success against KPIs. This hands-on module allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge and live event experience, enhancing their group working skills, reflection, and evaluation abilities.

Duration

How many semesters is the duration of the programme?

The degree programme is offered as a full-time option (six semesters, 36 months) and 100 % online. After you have successfully completed all examinations, UIS will award you the academic degree „Bachelor of Arts in Event Management“, which also entitles you to enrol for a master’s programme in the same field.
